Water Department

Joe Pace                       Water Department Operator                            (712) 523-2210

The Bedford Water Works purchases its water from the Southern Iowa Rural Water Association. SIRWA purchases the water from the City of Creston Water Works. Point of delivery to Bedford is at the old water treatment facility at the east end of Main Street. The water system consists of a 200,000 gallon elevated tower and approximately 13 miles of water mains ranging in size from 4" to 8". The water department maintains and repairs all water mains as well as fire hydrants.
Service lines are the responsibility of the property owner from the main to the house, including the curb box. Property owners buy the first water meter, and the department maintains them. Customers will be charged for repairs that occur due to neglect (frozen and ruptured).
Meters are read near the end of the month and bills are sent out on/about the 10th of the following month.
The Bedford Water Works is governed by a three member board that was established by an election in 1941. They hold their meetings the 1st Tuesday of the month in the Council Chambers at City Hall. These meetings are open to the public. Information regarding the system or Board policies may be obtained by calling Bedford City Hall at 712-523-2210.
